Greetings, earthlings.

Welcome to Wanderbites, our humble abode where you can find stories of food, travel, as well as culinary hits and misses.

Our journey began back in 2009 in Jakarta, when the word influencer was reserved for the likes of Bill Gates, and Instagram was still nonexistent. Many things may have changed since then, but let’s take a pause and go back to the basics.

Why Food?

Food is so much more than calories. The beautiful Padma Lakshmi once said, “The best thing you can do for someone is make them a beautiful plate of food. How else can you invade someone’s body without actually touching them?” Food affects emotion. Food can make someone feel happy or unhappy. Food is powerful.

Food is also an opportunity to create moments. Have you ever talked with your good friends over a cup of coffee? Had your first date at that new gelato place? Met your future in-laws at a Chinese food restaurant? Secured a business deal at that poshest place in the city?

For us, those are the appeal food. It’s not about having the title of being the best food blogger, but about influencing people’s live in a positive way and helping you. Say you’re broke and paycheck is still ten days away, or your client loves Japanese food yet you don’t know which place is good—we’ve got you covered on both situations. Not to mention we’ve had some pretty great times over food, and we want you to feel it too.

Our Manifesto

  1. 1

It’s not about being the first.

Everyone gets better with time and practice, including restaurants, cafés, and consequently their staffs. It’s difficult to assess an establishment’s true potential in its early weeks, let alone days. Being objective often means waiting until the hype has subsided, proneness to error has been reduced to a minimum, and the quality of service has become stable.

Having a personal, unique voice is of the utmost importance.

Contrary to popular belief, being a food blogger in Indonesia is not equal to 24/7 of free food. 90% of our review articles are funded by our own wallet. Yes, we occasionally accept invitations and work with several brands as well. Having said that, we always strive to be as neutral as possible—stating the positives but not neglecting to say what can be improved.

    Great visuals.

Presenting you with great visuals is our mission. Every photo has been taken, edited, and posted with care. When browsing through Wanderbites for reviews, make sure to read the article top-to-bottom and don’t get too caught up only in the visuals. Great photos do not always go hand in hand with extraordinary food taste.

  4. 4

    Writing opinionated food-related articles.

Let’s face it. Reviews are fun, but you (and we) need a break from it every once in a while. May we direct you to a couple of our non-review articles? Try “Sh*t Customers Say”, “30+ Best Coffee Photography Ideas: Step Up Your Instagram Game!” or “Why I Think We Shouldn’t Write Bad Restaurant Reviews” for starters.

We are open to constructive criticism.

The mayor of positive thinking, Norman Vincent Peale, once said, “The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.” Praise makes you feel good, but critique makes you better. Yes, feel free to drop us a comment on what can be improved or what else you want to see on Wanderbites. We don’t bite! 😉
