Those of you with a palate for fine things in life are most likely familiar with The Macallan, one of the leading producers of single malt Scotch whisky in the world. Movie fanatics might have also spotted The Macallan bottles at a couple of Bond movies, notably Spectre and Skyfall.

The Macallan Indonesia recently unveiled Edition No.3, a special collaboration between The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, and Master Perfumer from Roja Parfums, Roja Dove. While eating and drinking are acts of stimulus for all the five senses, this time Edition No. 3 naturally focus on smell.

Roja Dove offered his knowledge and experience to give a description of distinctive aromas in particular oak casks, then Bob Dalgarno utilised those to shape the final character of Edition No.3. Crafted in a combination of European and American oak casks, the result is an alluring, one-of-a-kind single malt whisky.

During the presentation, attendees, including yours truly, tasted The Macallan Edition No. 3 and were encouraged to discover the distinctive aromas: floral, fresh cut oak, citrus, vanilla, and chocolate. While I’m no whisky expert, a couple of of those tasting notes eventually registered their way to my brain. The whisky was smooth, flavorful, and aromatic.

More than just the whisky, The Macallan Indonesia did awesome with the event. I love the idea of provoking your olfactory senses with scented candles based on the tasting notes of Edition No.3. We had the opportunity to test a couple of perfumes, and I went with jasmine and wood for my personalized candles. It was a creative beginning to such a wonderful night.

The food pairing was also spot on—one of the best that I’ve ever tasted. If I were to rewind everything, I’d go with the Seared Sea Scallop all over again. I have a feeling that white meat is a great complement to whiskies. Or that’s just my palate? Either way, it was good. On top of that, tasting The Macallan from the classic type all the way to the latest one was indeed a memorable experience.

Special mention to Keith Nair, a great host during the event and The Macallan’s brand ambassador who went through a great length to discuss whisky with me during the night. Thank you Andrew and Felix for the hospitality, and most definitely Hadi Ismanto for making the introvert in me less introvert with entertaining and thoughtful conversations.

Whether you’re a budding liquor enthusiast or whisky connoisseur, The Macallan Edition No.3 is a fine bottle deserving of a spot in your drinking repertoire. And who knows it might also make you feel like Bond, James Bond. Even just for the duration of a shot of The Macallan Edition No. 3.
