I have this hypothesis that the harder you work, the more fulfilling your holiday would be. I was just near boiling point when Malaysia Airlines invited me for a trip to check out KL Big Kitchen, the first and the biggest culinary event in Malaysia. I took the opportunity, cleared out my schedule and it was a good call. I don’t think I’d survive another week given that much pressure at the time.
A much needed break indeed and I proved my hypothesis. I had one of the best time ever. Partially because of being pampered with good food and one of a kind experience at KL Big Kitchen and partially for the wonderful stay at Hilton Kuala Lumpur. I wouldn’t call this a hospitality review any more than I want to call my food stories here as a food review. So here’s how Hilton Kuala Lumpur managed to impress me.
Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury
I’m a big believer in investing in a good bed. You can have all the kinks in an expensive room, but it all means nothing if you can’t get a good night sleep. A good sign that Hilton Kuala Lumpur did it well was that I slept for less than 6 hours but I woke up fresh & energized. No, it wasn’t the endorphin at work.
Luxury is in the details
The difference is good and excellent is how good a property pay attention to the details? I always enjoy walking through a new room and spend some time rummaging through their thoughtfulness. The longer I spent, the better they are.
In the case of Hilton Kuala Lumpur, they won me at their welcoming pieces of chocolate and the hand-written message they left every morning after the room is cleaned. Oh wait, and did I mention Peter Thomas Roth toiletries?
Sometimes great food on a vacation is a lot closer than you think.
It was upstairs & downstairs. Literally. The earlier is a special breakfast area for executive floors located on the top floor overlooking stunning view of the city. I’d like to talk more on the latter though. Chynna is Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s take on fine Chinese cuisine. Me and the team from Malaysia Airlines had dinner together. I was impressed especially with how well they prepared their Peking Duck. Crispy tasty skin with sinful layer of fat just underneath, making it a mouthful treat on every bite. You can guess which plate gets cleared out faster than the other.
I also remember taking a special note on their Ginger Chicken. First thing that came to my head after taking one full bite was “Can I steal the recipe from the chef?” It was so darn good I wouldn’t mind making it into an afternoon movie time snack.
All that and added with witty fun conversation with the chef, the night was really a memorable one. Thanks again Chef Lam, or should I say … Chef Chow Yun Fat?
All that I could ever ask for
This trip, from the Business Class flight with Malaysia Airlines, until the cultural walk among historical sites, and the say at Hilton Kuala Lumpur, it was everything that I could ask for from a great trip. That been said, I think the hypothesis has little effect here. I would’ve enjoyed this even without all the hard work prior.
And that, is a compliment.
