Seven months after settling in its first home in West Jakarta, Three Folks Coffee & Creamery ventures to Cilandak, South Jakarta, to open a second outlet. Offering the same hard ice cream (your good ol’ regular ice cream, denser with less air and served at a cooler temperature compared to gelato) that it has become known for—alongside specialty coffee—this Three Folks is bigger and more spacious, yet still carrying the same spirit as its older brother.
Situated in the same building that also houses a B&B style lodging called Cilandak 14, Three Folks Cilandak occupies a rather large space for a coffee shop. The communal area can accommodate up to 50 people, not to mention there is a private room that can be filled with 15-30 people for private events. Different seating areas are available to cater to different customers. Sit on the tall stool by the window while chatting with friends, or pick the regular table-and-chair to get some work done.
Another alternative is to sit lesehan-style on a slightly elevated wooden platform. While the rack filled with children’s books and toys suggest that the particular area is meant for children, adults are welcome to enjoy the space as well. With tall windows that let in plenty of natural sunlight, Three Folks Cilandak is where one would not hesitate to spend a lot of time at.
The ice cream case at Three Folks Cilandak holds eight flavors at a time. Whether one is in the mood for putting together different ice cream flavors or a cup of Folksgato—Three Folks’ signature affogato that offers the choice of changing espresso to matcha or chocolate—the helpful staffs are always ready to give recommendations. Our mix of Earl Grey Cranberry and a shot of espresso is aromatic with bold taste of coffee meets tea. The chewy cranberry chunks on top add a fun sweet and sour note. Make sure to leave a room for one more scoop of ice cream, as the charcoal and marmalade combo in Black Citrus is too good to miss.
Food is an eclectic mix of Japanese, Indonesian, and Western fare. Chicken Nanban Don is a foolproof dish of white rice and crunchy chicken karaage, while Jagaimo Cheese is a potato pancake with sweet mozzarella and maple syrup. Ultimately ice cream still wins the day, but kudos to Three Folks Cilandak for providing affordably-priced food for hunger emergencies.
To round up the Three Folks Cilandak experience, have a taste of its liquid concoctions as well. Both adventurous palates and coffee fanatics have various options to choose from. Besides hot and iced coffee made with different techniques—espresso, manual brew, cold drip—there are also tea and chocolate based drinks.
Anytime you find yourself in Cilandak, do drop by Three Folks Coffee & Creamery for a scoop of ice cream and a cup of joe. Hide from the heat, pamper your eyes with a view of green trees, or bring along your little one for some reading and play time. After all of those, perhaps, you’ll be ready to face the mad Cilandak traffic once again.
