As strange as it may sound, the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread wakes me up better than a cup of coffee. It reminds me of a morning in a beachy island during a family holiday many years ago. The smell of bread gets my appetite running. More than that, it makes me happy. So first and foremost, thank you Beau HQ, for giving me that.
After two outlets at Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia, this bakery finally opened its own place in Cikajang a couple of weeks ago: Beau HQ. As soon as the white building comes into view, our lips sing words of praises of how it looks. Big windows, green plants, and all that jazz. If Beau HQ were a man, it would be a tall British guy with a 6 o’clock shadow, a square jaw, and a man bun. The place is Beautiful, to say the least.
While the rhythmic beat of the music plays on and the loud woosh of a heavy, windy rain knocks on the ceiling, everything carries on as usual inside. Talita Setyadi, the woman behind Beau, is sitting on a corner, absorbed in her notes. A lot of customers are snapping photos of their food. Staffs are busy working inside the open kitchen. Everyone is doing their own thing at Beau HQ, looking comfortable, as if they have been here a hundred times.
The menu at Beau HQ is categorized based on the type of bread used, such as sourdough, flatbread, or baguette. There’s no need to question the quality of the bread, as proven by their Smørrebrød. This open-faced sandwich is a staple in its homeland, Denmark, like bagels to New Yorkers. It is served on a dark rye bread with toppings of your choice. Our favorite is Gravad Laks, which dishes up smoked salmon, dill, yogurt, beet, radish, and microgreens. Between those ingredients and a bread that is high in fiber? Dang, I feel healthy.
Our time at Beau HQ is completed with a portion Mont Violet (if you like sweet potato, you’ll like this cake) and a cup of hot cappuccino (roasted by Common Grounds Jakarta). Bread, cake, and coffee—all is well in the world.
One trivia: Do you know that Beau is a now a part of Potato Head family? We always love their creations, and this HQ is no exception. It’s safe to conclude that this is one of those times when braving through the notorious Jakarta traffic during rain to search for a new place results in a happy ending. Fingers crossed, may those times find us again in the near future.
