D’Kevin Sudirman : Bar Bistro & Steak

Passing through Sudirman is always something of a conundrum. There was the 3-in-1 policy once, then it was gone. One day the traffic is super friendly, the next day you have to spend 1 hour just to get through 500 meters. Sudirman is unpredictable. What if you got stuck around the area with nothing to do, suffering from an acute case of hangry? That’s where D’Kevin Bar, Bistro & Steak comes in.

Snuggled on the lobby level of arguably the coolest office in Sudirman, Intiland Tower, green is the first noticeable feature of D’Kevin. Lush hanging vines that decorate the building creates an impression of oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. Then, the chic outdoor space grabs my attention with its birdcage-like chairs and striped pillows, complete with one electrical outlet per table, perfect for working and meetings. Definite plus points for location and ambience.

Stepping inside, the sunny atmosphere turns 180 degrees into this dark, sexy, cool vibe. Wine dispenser. Wine cellar. Red sofa. Parquet flooring. An impressive-looking bar. Gramophone. Sophisticated hanging bulbs. There’s also my favorite: cake display. The cake display looks a bit bare with only a few choices, but perhaps that’s what I’m getting for visiting quite early in the morning. Oh well, it’s better than no cake.

After cakes and coffee, it’s time for more sustenance. Half Chicken Betutu is a great pick. The portion is generous, the seasoning is spot on, albeit the chef’s twist in using cabai hijau, and it reminds me of sunny days in Bali—thank you for that, Betutu. From Asian delight, I then hop onto the pasta section for Creamy Black Sturgeon Pasta. The sauce is creamy but not too heavy—carbonara lovers would surely enjoy this one—and the scallops are perfectly cooked, not rubbery. Other than that, the salads are pretty enjoyable, if not a little generic. Opt for Chicken Berries Salad if you’re up for something different.

While I’m dying to give their steak a try, my stomach screams “no more food”. The restaurant owner is also an importer and supplier of meat to major restaurants in Jakarta, which means here at D’Kevin the steak quality is the best you can find. They make sure that the cut of every portion is at least 2 cm thick to preserve and encapsulate the juice inside the beefy goodness. That is the only way they do and will serve the meat. Very, very tempting. What can I say? My stomach is the boss and it has said no, so steak has to wait until my next visit.

D’Kevin is indeed an ideal place to escape Sudirman for a while. With its long list of food and beverage, you’ll bound to find something you like. I’m sure I’ll be back in the near future, partly because they play a lot of John Mayer and Postmodern Jukebox tunes that I like. And I still owe their steak a proper hello.
