What’s the secret of success? Is it innovation? Swimming against the current? Refusing to accept status quo? An immaculate plan and great execution? Epigastro, a new establishment at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) certainly ticks all the boxes.
There are hundreds of restaurants at PIK, and at some point everything starts to blur. But then comes Epigastro. Amongst endless options of food offered at this part of the city, they manage to find one niche that no one else has dared to dip their feet at: healthy food.
The so-called healthy food trend started a couple of years ago in South Jakarta. It is a trend that spreads slowly instead of rampantly (unlike specialty coffee shops), and took its time to go outside its birthplace. When it finally travels north, Epigastro does it with a big bang. All or nothing.
This daring move is materialized in a one-stop place that promotes healthy living. On the first floor is Epigastro: kitchen, juice bar, and grocer. Aside from serving healthy food, they also sell chia seeds, muesli, and homemade bread alongside cold-pressed juices with witty names like Hail to Kale, Berry Good, and Rocket Fuel.
The whole space feels warm and natural with plenty of green plants, creating an eating-in-your-garden kind of feeling. Bright and very well ventilated. There are also health-related quotes—ones you normally read on Pinterest—plastered here and there. To top it all off, the upper floors house a very posh gym, Epitome.
Enough about the place, let’s get on with the yummy stuffs.
Healthy food restaurants are often associated with fruit bowls and juices. Yes, Epigastro serves that too, but it is interesting to see other dishes not commonly associated with healthy food on the menu as well, namely Indonesian and Western dishes. Everything is cooked with a healthy twist, such as replacing white rice with brown rice, and using organic ingredients.
The Pepperoni Pizza, for instance, represents real Italian pizza very well. The thin crust is just right, topped with slightly smoky pepperoni, and fragrant cheese. Add a bit of black pepper on top, and it is one comforting dish. Meanwhile, the salmon dish is cooked to perfection. The inside is still pink and moist—it simply glides in your mouth! Can we also give a shout out to the Sweet Potato Chips? Crunchy and oh-so-gorgeous with an unusual cut.
Looking at the length of the queue, Epigastro has made its mark in PIK’s ever-changing F&B culinary scene. We’d like to believe that with maintaining its superb standard in service and food quality, Epigastro shall survive and continue to spread the healthy lifestyle to people in North Jakarta. Price might be more on the premium side, but you do get what you pay for.
