Intrigued is what I felt when I heard of HOURS Kelapa Gading’s catchphrase coffee and more for the first time. More—only four letters, yet so many different ways to interpret. The word might evoke a sense of ambiguity in the beginning, but once you get to know what HOURS has to offer, you’ll understand why the term is fitting.
It all began with the name. HOURS originally came from the word ours, as people behind it want the space to be a hangout spot for family and friends. Add the fact that this situation is closely related to spending time and creating memorable moments, the name HOURS was born.
The first way to do that is by designing an open space that also feels personal. HOURS’ interior holds sentimental values, representing pieces of the founders. The architect’s love for vintage cars is shown in one corner, while the coffee machine is customized with nuances of owner-favorite Jo Malone. Take a look around you and observe the display of a mix between classic and modern art. Those tidbits translate to a comfortable space, both in terms of atmosphere and physicality. It’s the kind of comfy I’ve never found in Kelapa Gading area before. Imagine a sofa so snug that you don’t want to get up for hours, and a window view of green potted plants that you’ll forget this is one of most congested cities in the world.
A more obvious meaning of coffee and more is, of course, food. Start with a plate of Mango Salad, which serves up a harmonious combo of freshness, acidity, sweetness, and crunch. Follow that with diverse mains. Fried Rice comes with a Vietnamese twist of using broken rice. Instead of full grains, the fried rice is cooked using a purposefully broken rice grains. You can taste each individual grain of rice clearly, creating a texture party in your mouth. When you’re in the mood for something soupy, give Seafood Gravy Rice Noodle a go. This is one is flavorful with great texture. You can smell the fragrant broth even before the bowl touches the table. Think of it as an interpretation of Mie Jawa, a good ol’ Indonesian-Chinese Peranakan kind of food.
Honorable mention also goes to the 350 grams Angus Beef Sirloin Steak, which is only available during dinner. HOURS insists on using 350 grams instead of the usual 200 grams to ensure diners can get a proper beef cut with a minimum thickness of one inch. The result is an extra juicy steak, especially when cooked as a medium or medium-rare. Another beauty of eating 350 grams is you can order it for sharing between two people and still have room for one or two more dishes, plus dessert. However, if you’re feeling like something healthier, go for Chia Seed Pudding. Despite characterized as being very Western, the dish uses coconut broth, giving a touch of Indonesia. Pair that with one of the smoothies, all incorporating Greek Yogurt to get a good balance between sweet and sour. Perfect texture—not too slushy and not too thick—and great selection of flavors. All in all, HOURS is a colorful dining place. Each menu seems to come from a different place but meets each other beautifully on the table.
Beyond all of those, HOURS Kelapa Gading is also dedicated to hosting events with its private room that can hold 30 to 40 people. There’s also the possibility of it being a pet-friendly café in the future. Although this one is still a plan and we can’t promise anything, HOURS’ team is probably going to develop its outdoor area for that. We’ll see. For now, we’ve seen Milky and Coffee, the owners’ Corgis, running around with their cute short legs.
So, a café to hide and recharge. A variety of tasty food. A place for events. A space to enjoy art. Or perhaps you have caught on others meanings from the word more? HOURS Kelapa Gading is definitely more than meets the eye. More than everyone would have thought to have in Kelapa Gading. More than the usual cafés in Jakarta. In other words, we can safely confirm that HOURS is true to its catchphrase: coffee and (a whole lot) more.
