Kaihomaru Jakarta : Exploring Japanese Food In Little Tokyo

Fresh sashimi at Kaihomaru Little Tokyo Jakarta

It is terribly hard to move on from Japan. The beautiful weather in spring, the culture, and most importantly the extensive array of good food to choose from. This triggered a visit to Melawai – Blok M, Jakarta’s very own Little Tokyo, with a few dear friends of mine.

With a curated list from The Travelling Barista, we started with Echigoya Ramen, then moved to Kaihomaru Jakarta to sample the so-called one the most authentic Japanese experiences in town.

I must admit it is pretty similar. It’s small to begin with. Six tables and a sushi-bar section. It’s filled with Japanese expat speaking Nihongo, drinking their beers and smoking their cigarettes. Oh, and the toilet is fully equipped with heated seat, your ‘undercarriage’ washer and all. An exact epitome of what you’d find all over Japan.

Beyond the ambience though, their menus are authentically extensive, such as sashimi, yakimono, and onigiri. So don’t expect to get that fusion of mayo on your sushi. Be prepared instead for a classic taste that highlights the ingredients or some umami play of flavor. We found the latter on their Agedashi Tofu (IDR 64K), which came in a generous portion of three slices and strong tentsuyu sauce.

Tamago at Kaihomaru - Buttery goodness!
Buttery worthy every penny Tamago (IDR 25K)

Kaisen Futomaki Sushi (IDR 59K)

Also my personal favorites were their Salmon Sashimi (IDR78K) and Tamago (IDR25K). The salmon was fresh, cleanly cut, and not too watery—everything you could ask for from the dish. The tamago was wonderfully buttery. It made a good addition of taste to the other dishes on the table, such a steal for the price tag! At the end of the lunch, I was so happy to see that everyone was well pampered. Good food, good friends, and good convo are the ultimate dining experience indeed. I almost moved on. Kaihomaru Jakarta is recommended!
