When others shy away from extremity in the way they portray themselves, Mother Monster does the opposite and embraces it wholeheartedly. Taking the role of a family-loving yet somewhat repressed housewife with a penchant for savagery, Mother Monster is poetically provocative, casually throwing words such as jugular veins and murder in social media. In a world where images and texts behind the phone screen is a major factor in catching one’s interest, Mother Monster has done an exemplary job.
In the flesh, Mother Monster’s home in Plaza Indonesia manages to translate the multi-faceted mother personality into an interesting physicality. The entrance area is almost tame with a grey outlook and coffee bar, a contrast to the pink-hued second room that shares space with the dark, mysterious alcohol bar. At the very back is a semi-outdoor smoker-friendly area, the go-to-place for natural sunlight. Despite her conflicting personality, mother indeed knows best and she provides a place for everyone.
The wit is also present in the selection of provisions and libations, two terms that Mother Monster use to call her food and drinks. Expect a wide range of spirits, liquor, wine, and quirky-named cocktails (think of the lines of Chocolate Mar-three-ni) alongside juices and caffeine concoctions to pair with the Western-inspired menus.
Per Mother Monster’s staff recommendation, our choice of pasta falls to 48-Hour-Ragu, slow-cooked minced beef in wine and stock, pappardelle, and fried sage. It’s simple with familiar flavors done right. For those of you who prefer a touch of acidity to close your meal, She’s a Tart is a definite treat. The tangy lemon curd is balanced with a sweetness from the Italian meringue spread. It’s safe to say that Mother Monster Plaza Indonesia plays with tried-and-tested comforting taste that can cater to a wide range of palates. Price is on the more expensive side of the scale, but well worth the quality of ingredients and the strategic location.
Mother Monster Plaza Indonesia is one neat package of presentation, reminding us of Ismaya’s Mr. Fox in the way it adopts a character. Instead of a suave fox, Mother Monster represents all the elements of modern women: soft yet strong, feminine and sarcastic, seemingly docile but not. Whether there’s a real person behind mother persona (perhaps Ms. Gloria Susindra, the head chef?) or not, Mother Monster is an inspiring brand with tasty food to match. We’re a fan.
