Common Grounds got The Bropunzel Barista
ABCD got The Phat Uncle
Koultoura got The Dynamic Duo
Well Ombe Kofie got The Kick-Ass Uncle
You hear them right. Behind the bar you’ll find a guy in his 50’s sporting t-shirt, shorts and DC’s sneakers with tons of stories to tell. Not to miss, the signature gray hair. He goes by Jason and everything about Ombe is an epitome of his quirky personality. From the furniture’s design to how the coffee shop came into life is his work of passion.
The panel of vintage ‘Potato-Head’ inspired woods are handpicked by The Kick-Ass Uncle himself while he was cycling around the hood. The sofa with mini tables and saucer holder is a brainchild of his idea.
More than meets the eye though, enjoying a cup of coffee here is an experience you can’t replicate anywhere else. The Kick-Ass Uncle will personally introduce you to his other customers. He seems to know them very well and likewise. It was a very homey & friendly atmosphere during the few hours that I spent there.
With a three group La Marzocco Strada, Ombe Kofie makes a bold statement of their take on coffee. Added to that equation is their own signature house blend that comprises of Brazil, Colombia & Ethiopia beans. All roasted in Singapore. Best enjoyed with milk, either Cappuccino or Piccolo.
On the filter side of the bar, a few imported single-origins are available and will always be changing with new stuffs. At the time of my visit, there was Jamaican Blue.
Ombe’s coffee are all properly taken care of and prepared. The only setback for me is the fact that food are not available. It seems like Kick-Ass Uncle don’t mind though if customer bring in pisang goreng from the neighboring store.
With all that in mind, I’d say It will be soon before long that Ombe becomes a verb among Northerners in casual conversation.
