It is not common to find Chinese restaurant in South Jakarta, let alone finding one that focuses on Hong Kong cuisine. But I guess, the founders of Po Lim Cha Chaan Teng are a rare breed. I have never met them in person, but kudos for the guts!
Cha Chaan Teng is crazily popular in Hong Kong for all the right reasons: affordable comfort food at any hours of the day. Its like your neighborhood kopitiam for Singaporeans or Malaysians. Or in Jakarta’s case, warung indomie & roti bakar. Over the years, Cha Chaan Teng has become a big part of the society that it was proposed to be one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Now, how about Po Lim’s rendition of Cha Chaan Teng?
It’s still early to judge, but on my visit, it was enjoyable but still lacking that ‘umph’. The little spark that makes me want to come back.
On the table was the signature Lai Cha (HK Style Milk Tea), Yuen Yeung (HK Style Coffee & Milk Tea), Original & Ovomaltine Crispy Bun, and HK Fried Rice. Both drinks were enjoyable, not too sweet, giving you that refreshed feel without worrying about your sugar intake. However, if there’s one thing that speaks to me the most on the lunch, that would be the original crispy bun with a distinct buttery-milky taste. If only the bun was a little bit friendlier to the teeth though, I would’ve ordered a second portion.
On the other dishes, I reckon its the fact that they don’t use MSG or pork that caused my tongue to feel somewhat monotonous. Some might find it a plus, some might not. I’m on the latter team. While one visit is not enough, for sure though, if you want to experience something different, Po Lim Cha Chaan Teng is worth trying. You might just save yourself a trip to Hong Kong.
