Et Al, or ‘with others’, is a Latin expression used to convey the sort of company that you brought with you. It refers to the human way of working together with people. Add the word ‘tea’ in it, and these words translate into ‘Tea with Others’. Nestled in Pacific Place’s upscale Galeries Lafayette, Leaf Connoisseur by Tea Et Al promises to bring quality tea experience to have alongside your friends and family at their one-of-a-kind tea store and restaurant.
A crowd of small groups already gathered there for the grand opening. Daylight trailed the windows and into the open and occupied seats of the small establishment, giving just the ample warmth needed to sit comfortably. The very wide, and almost intimidating menu came to our faces with foreign words that were understandable yet unfamiliar. Flavors.
Midnight in Paris. Umami. Sunset Boulevard. Parisian Classic, Magical Wish, and many others that flew through my mind as I was observing and smelling the diverse selection of tea. The point is, they had lots of tea.
Et Al also served the full course of a meal. My fellow food enthusiast – Michelle – tried the Herb Crusted Barramundi, while I opted for a Chardonnay Norwegian Salmon. Before these came, we were served some typical appetizers to make the waiting seem less dreadful (the host did comment on how there might be logistical problems in the kitchen). My dish was fulfilling although somehow underwhelming, yet the near-perfectly seared salmon redeemed it. Michelle’s fared better: the Barramundi was crisp, zesty and slightly salty, which was a great treat for the taste buds on every bite.
As we sipped tea for a lengthy while until Michelle’s soufflé came, we heard thank-you’s that paused every ten minutes or so. The tender soufflé hit just the right spot for our mutual craving of some sweetness. The opening came to a close right as the sun starts to set – ending a thematic dining experience. I cancelled my dessert order after a length of time as I had to leave for a date, and Michelle had to head home.
And later that night, my date noticed the bag that I had carried, and went on to open its contents.
“A box of tea?” she inquired.
“Yes and some other stuff.”
As she examined the letters inside, she said slowly, “Tea… Et Al.”
I thought of the translation of those words.
And then, another crossed my mind: “Next time in Et Al, she’s definitely going too.”
