You would’ve thought that as someone who blog about food, I’d do nothing and simply glutton out on my birthday. Well, that came across my mind, but I just don’t resonate with it somehow.

Here’s the thing, I don’t come from a family that blow candles and cut cakes. Well actually we are not that big on any kind of celebrations anyway. So, thirty years of no expectations and not much … wishes, I was finally moved to break the chain and appreciate what the universe has blessed me with.

I typed “ideas to celebrate turning thirty” on Google. A bunch of things came up. From rock climbing to yacht party, but all of them feels blaaah until I stumbled upon staycation at a nice hotel. That’s it! What speaks more about celebrating how far I’ve come and at the same time looking at where I want to go than a day of pampering, of not having to reply work emails, of Netflix and chill, of popping a nice bottle of wine, of sleeping in and waking up late, oh the list are endless.

I remembered having an unused hotel voucher from months ago. I called up Grand Hyatt Jakarta, secured a room and head there on the weekend.

My first impression of the room : Spaciously Rewarding.

At 50sqm, the Club King feels much larger with the two huge windows overlooking Bundaran HI from the 20th floor. And that kingsize bed … yum! Although I’m quite a tidy sleeper and probably not going to use the space anyway but it feels good to at least have the option.

I wasn’t done enjoying the view when I found out that Grand Hyatt Jakarta has prepared a surprise box of chocolate and a lovely wishes in the room. And I wasn’t even done enjoying the chocolate when the bell rings and as it turn out, the marketing team hand carried a surprise birthday cake. I ran out of words. Surprise after surprise. Thank you. Thank you for making my special day even more colourful.

The little details that matter.

Speaking of colourful, I love the contemporary looking room with a dash of Indonesian accent here and there. I love the tiny details that matters. From the bedside international electric plugs to the iPod connectivity plug next to the TV. From the 24 hour room service to the Executive Lounge upstairs that serve free cocktails in the evening. Finally, you can’t beat the convenience of having the mall just right under. I practically lived there for a day and won’t even bother going out. However, if there’s one thing they could improve is the iPod dock, as I believe iPhone 4/4s are at least three years behind now.

It’s easily one of the best staycation I’ve ever had. Not mentioning the hearty breakfast. Food is a forte Grand Hyatt Jakarta can be proud of. I can’t help stealing some muffins into the room. Also, the famous Tomahawk Steak at C’s is a legendary talk of the town. But I’ll save that probably for my next birthday.

Turning Thirty as it turns out was not as scary as I thought. At one of the hours, I contemplate and realize that I’ve done all that I could and I would. I’m content and look forward for what’s ahead in store tomorrow. With or without the cakes and the candles.
