From the moment I walked into Hotel 1929’s lobby, I know they are different compared to others in the same league.
First thing I noticed is the interior and the selection of furnishing that looks like a set from Pulp Fiction. I can see either Vincent or Jules in their suit sitting in the red vintage barber shop chair getting all pampered, having the calm before the storm scene.
Second thing is the welcome snack section right across the reception. Instead of mocktails, they have 3-4 different nibbles, guaranteed to set you on a rewind button at least two decades back to your childhood. Well played 1929. Who wouldn’t like a little trip down the memory lane?
But hey, are those the only thing that makes Hotel 1929 different? Obviously, there are more to uncover. Lets!
Design Centered Boutique Hotel
Coming from the Unlisted Collection group who brought you Wanderlust, New Majestic, and the much anticipated Old Clare Hotel in Sydney, you can be assured that they make every inch of the room well designed in both function and beauty. Not stopping at the lobby, the alleys along the way to the room are also decorated with black and white pictures of Singapore in the good old days.
The Terrace Suite that I stayed in are simple an Instagrammers’ haven. Almost every corner shout hipsters and would definitely look great in square. I personally love the outdoor terrace the most as it makes a wonderful place to sit down, have a coffee and read. That, or actually you could also bathe under a million stars. Ain’t that romantic?
Tech-Infused Old Shophouses
Built on restored shophouses doesn’t mean Hotel 1929 forgo relevance in exchange of authenticity. Instead, they manage to cater to guests of the 21st century. Inside the room, you’ll find a large flat TV, a Nespresso coffee machine and a free to use smart phone or what they call ‘Handy’. Yes, the smartphone gives you a complimentary usage on your stay with unlimited local calls and 3G data. It is also pre-loaded with apps and a host of social media applications. Sweet!
I’ve always enjoyed staying around Chinatown area. Not only that there’s plenty of food at the Keong Saik road where the hotel is located, there are also neighbouring food court that opens early in the morning until late at night. My personal favorite is the Hong Lim Complex. The Outram Park Kway Teow and Ah Heng Chicken Curry is a must visit if you happen to be around. For $4, it is a steal!
Overall, I’d say for those who are into a different experience compared to chain hotels, Hotel 1929 is one of the options I’d recommend. Great location, well designed, plenty of food, free complimentary-use smartphone, what else do you need?
