Food has been very colorful here at PIK. Japanese? Check. Korean? Check. Italian? Check. Indonesian? Check. Name any cuisine and we have it. However, it is rather pale on the coffee department. The very few that we currently have are not even worth mentioning, let alone occupying a proper review at Wanderbites. However as of last week, a new light has shone on the street right at the back of Tekko/Leko.
Pennyroyal Coffee PIK fills that gap just in time. There couldn’t be a more opportune moment than now to bring specialty coffee to the North. We’ve had it in South & Central Jakarta way back, we’ve had it in the West. Just recently we’re blessed with the appearance of Ombe Kofie in Pluit. Having another one in PIK sounds about right. After all, we are talking neighborhood coffee shop. The kind that you go to for a pick-up before heading to work, an after lunch stop over, or even an alternative office.
The Trio—Max, Cynthia and Mimi The Dog—runs the place everyday from 8AM to 6PM, each with their own station. Max works his craft behind LaMarzocco C3 while waiting for the actual weapon-of-choice to arrive from Italy, the two group Linea. Cynthia bakes stuffs to accompany your caffeine intake. Mimi is in charge of playing cute and warming the place up. All works in harmony and I really enjoy being here for hours.
If you’re a fan of Nirvana, then the name Pennyroyal will ring a bell to you. But beyond that, they imagine Pennyroyal Coffee as a place where coffee and art can blend in together. Photos and movies especially. I particularly love the Before Sunset / Before Sunrise posters right on top of the shelves and the classic monochromatic pictures on the wall that set the tone of the place.
I’ve only been here twice for the cappuccino. The second cup is better than the first one. As they are still tweaking with the beans and the machine, I’d say it’s still a bit too early to touch on this subject. We’ll see how they roll when they get their Linea and proper blend of beans. But at the meantime, all is well, all is enjoyable. Give them a visit and let me know what you think. Oh, and if you see me around, do give me a high-five.
