Talking about Katsutoku Senayan has got to start from the crunch.
There’s something utterly satisfying about the way crunchy katsu attacks your palate. That defining moment when you’re about to take a bite for the first time. When the crunchy skin touches your teeth and tongue. Biting into the juicy flesh. Dear God of Food, let me be your slave. Amen.
Ever since the Japanese-chain Katsusei disappears from Jakarta, I’ve never found another place that specializes in katsu. A place where the katsu is properly deep fried with no off-putting excess oil, making me feel less guilty for eating a somewhat unhealthy food. Fast forward to 2017, I found out that one Katsusei outlet remains at Sentral Senayan, and the name has been changed into Katsutoku. It’s time for a visit.
Katsutoku Senayan serves katsu in different variants: pork, curry, chicken, prawn, and oyster, among others. My eyes were instantly drawn to Pork Sausage Katsu Curry Set (IDR 133K), which are only available for 10 portions per day. The organic pork (Google ‘em for further reading) katsu met all the requirements of a good katsu, while the pork sausage tasted sinfully delicious—juicy, meaty, and cheesy. Paired with generous amount of fluffy white rice, tonjiru soup, pickles, and sweet-spicy kare sauce, I officially died and went to katsu heaven.
Cheese Katsu (IDR 40K) was also a highlight. Six small balls of perfectly deep fried mozzarella cheese? Count me in any time of the day. The pricing at Katsutoku Senayan might put you off, but chances are you’ll be very happy with what you get. High quality katsu, and if you decide to get the set menu, the portion is big enough to share between 2 ladies.
While the locations is quite hidden and at the first visit you might have to ask someone about the exact location, there’s absolutely no secret about how Katsutoku Senayan will hook you in. No fuss, no frills, just pure awesome katsu. I’m sure the repeat customers and many Japanese patrons will tell you the same thing.
