Chocolate Comma at Moreau Chocolatier’s Café Kemang

Moreau Chocolatier's Café Kemang Review

It was only a couple of weeks ago during our visit to Kakolait Gading Serpong when the question came up, “When is Jakarta going to have more chocolate cafés?” Like rubbing Aladdin’s magic lamp, Genie granted that wish. Meet Moreau Chocolatier’s Café, a new café at Kemang area that puts spotlight on chocolate.

Choosing yellow and brown as their primary colors in decor, Moreau Chocolatier’s Café is different from third wave coffee shops, hip brunch spots, and artsy spaces around Kemang area. The two-storey café is quite simple. It is not until you look hard at the details that you’ll start appreciating the physicality. For instance, how beautiful the flowing chocolate fountain is. Or how comfortable the sofas are, inviting you to sit down a bit longer.

While the visuals won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no doubt the menu will delight all chocolate enthusiasts. There are more than thirty dishes that involve chocolate—crepe, waffle, pancake, fondant, cake, and many of their variations—plus chocolate drinks. Everything is made using Belgian chocolate. The only non-chocolate offerings are a couple of drinks.

Moreau Chocolatier’s Café’s Lava Cake is the best lava cakes I’ve had in a while. While the classic presentation of “hidden” melting chocolate is missing, this lava cake makes up for it with generous amount of molten chocolate. The cake is very moist and works beautifully with the vanilla ice cream. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, Moreau Crepe or one of the fruity dishes would be a better option. As for drinks, Moreau Hot Chocolate is a delight. Although the dark chocolate version is still not as bitter as I hope it would be, it is still enjoyable and less sweet compared to some other hot chocolate at other cafés.

Just right for current weather in Jakarta

Kudos to Moreau Chocolatier’s Café for being brave enough to be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons. To be chocolate in the middle of coffee. It must have stemmed from a love for chocolate, as can be seen from the owner’s hands-on approach in the kitchen. By the way, the owner hails from Dubai. So ladies, if having chocolate comma at Moreau Chocolatier’s Café is not enough incentive for you, refer to my last sentence and keep your fingers crossed that the owner will be there at the time of your visit. If you get what I mean.
