One of the many things that I admire from the Japanese is how meticulous they are toward a subject that they’re passionate about. They’d spend hours, days, even years perfecting their craft. Take the famous Tokyo Banana for example. Who would have thought of taking something so ordinary, add their own twist and churn it into tons of variety of products. Do you know there’s even Tokyo Banana baumkuchen and dorayaki?
Or take Jiro Sushi for another extreme. His apprentice need to spend a year at least just to master at handling rice alone. A life dedicated to sushi that eventually earned him 3-Michelin Star.
Such is the case with Shirohige Totoro Cream Puff Shop in Tokyo. Started in 2007, they spent the first few years of their history selling mostly Totoro Cream Puff until recently they came up with seasonal taste. On my visit there was Chestnut, Chocolate and Blueberry too. Tried all the flavors and each one of them are tasty. See how cute they are? Damn cute, I was confused where to start eating them. Starting from the head just seems to cruel somehow.
See, this is the differentiating mojo. I imagine if we have Totoro cream puff in Jakarta, it would be cute, yes, but it wouldn’t taste good. I can name a few existing products that goes viral just because they are cute. But this Shirohige Totoro cream puff goes beyond looks, they actually taste good.
The only drawback would be it is pretty far, the closest station Setagaya-daita is still being constructed. So yeah, it is quite an effort, but for me it’s very much worth it.
A few tips before coming here:
1. Make reservations.
It does get pretty crowded during the day. When I got there the seats are all reserved, but they kindly gave me a seat for 45 mins. The crowd are mostly young moms. I was practically the only guy who sit and eat there that afternoon. If you can ask for a seat outside. It’s perfect lighting for your Instagram’s bragging right shots.
2. Yep, they speak English
But be corteous, ask “Eigo Ga Hanasemasuka?” (Do you speak English?)
3. Book for your Totoro cream puff.
As you make reservation ask them to set aside a few cream puff for you, otherwise they usually run out by 3PM.
